About the Artist:

John DenHouter is an accomplished, award-winning artist, and professor of art and design at Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville. Over the past 30 years he has created his own unique artistic style. DenHouter specializes in plein air* painting, using the traditional artistic style of “impressionism” to evolve his signature look.

In reflecting on his body of work, DenHouter wrote “my paintings highlight the various seasons, atmospheric conditions, and times of day that I have observed while working directly from nature.”

Trains and industrial infrastructures, such as barges and dams, and especially local historic architecture, comprise DenHouter’s southern Illinois iconography.

Through his personal painting and public teaching John DenHouter has embraced and shared the practical, social, and civic aspirations of History and the Arts.

Plein air is a French term that translates to “open air”. It refers to the act of painting outdoors, directly observing and capturing the landscape or environment in natural light.
