ABOUT THE EXHIBIT:

Visions of Us: Southern Illinois Portraits by Paul Elledge is a celebration of the remarkable people who live here with a new appreciation of their cultural complexities and diversities.

Paul Elledge challenges those who see only stereotypes with an exhibition featuring a variety of people with differing backgrounds, occupations, and outlooks. Ultimately, this exhibition asks “Are we really all that different?” For today’s complex world, Paul Elledge reminds us that men and women with democratic fortitude can rise from the humblest of places. A new vision for social order and harmony unfolds with this exhibition.

Historic Illinois: Barns & Coal Mining presents two major industries of Southern Illinois and provides context for the Visions of Us exhibition. These photographs of Illinois barns and coal mining originate from two 1980 exhibits in the Cedarhurst collections.  Organized by the Illinois State Historical Society “Barns of Illinois” was originally designed to be hand-held photographs that schoolchildren could study up close. “The American Coal Miner” was commissioned in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter to document how coal miners lives had changed over the past 30 years. The coal miner exhibition documented 17 states including Illinois.

205 photographs were entered in this year’s competition from 51 different artists, representing 17 southern Illinois communities! 40 works were accepted representing 25 artists. We are delighted that so many people in the region are involved in the art of photography and that we are able to offer this challenge. Awards include cash prizes for Best of Show, 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place and Honorable Mention Certificates.

The 2023 competition judge was Jenny Kettler.
