ABOUT THE EXHIBIT:
Peas Come to Table is the title of Andrew Saftel’s latest painting. The phrase, “peas come to table”, was first written by Thomas Jefferson in his farm journal on May 22, 1773. Jefferson, a farmer, cultivated 24 different varieties of peas. The paintings of Andrew Saftel are a kind of cultivation where signs and symbols, like seeds, are planted, and nourished with painterly embellishments. We can read “peas come to table” as an analogy of Saftel’s art-making; his paintings are gifts for the viewer to harvest.
