Snuggle & Snooze: I Spy

For this year’s annual Snuggle & Snooze exhibition, the Cedarhurst Quilters drew inspiration from the beloved children’s game and book series I Spy.

The game I Spy originated as a children’s guessing game in the 19th century, evolving from earlier hide-and-seek variations. The word spy comes from Middle English and Old French terms meaning “to watch” or “observe.” Over time, I Spy became a popular parlor and travel game enjoyed by generations of children and families. In the late 20th century, the concept found new life through the bestselling I Spy books by authors Jean Marzollo and Walter Wick, which combined visual puzzles with rhyming riddles that challenged readers to search for hidden objects.

Inspired by the spirit of observation, discovery, and playfulness found in I Spy, members of the Cedarhurst Quilters created quilts that invite viewers to look closely and uncover unexpected details stitched into each work. Through color, pattern, texture, and imagery, these quilts celebrate the joy of finding something new each time you look.

About the Cedarhurst Quilters: The Cedarhurst Quilters meet on the first Thursday of each month. Meetings begin with a mini-workshop at 9:00 a.m., followed by a regular business meeting at 12:30 p.m. Throughout the year, members participate in retreats, educational programs, and community service projects, including quilts donated to local charities.
