During the month of December students participating in the ArtTime afterschool program, grades K-5th, were inspired by the children’s book, Snowmen at Night*, by Carolyn Buehner, illustrated by Mark Buehner. After reading this playful story about the fun adventures Snowmen have at night, students were introduced to new watercolor painting techniques. They learned how to draw snowflakes using oil pastels, liquid watercolor washes and salt to create beautiful winter backgrounds. The snowmen were cut by hand and assembled with paper scarves, twig arms and marker accents. This was a great art project that the students really enjoyed right before the holidays.
The ArtZone afterschool class, grades 6th-8th, were also inspired by wintertime after viewing the book Snowflakes in Photographs* by W.A. Bentley. Emphasizing how no two snowflakes are alike and their amazing geometric patterns, students were encouraged to design their own. Using oil pastels, watercolor washes and salt to create these colorful paintings it is clear to see how no two artists are alike and the amount of creativity developing in our new junior high after-school art program.
